Canon Powershot SX70HS : A Major Flop?

Canon has officially announced the latest "super zoom" bridge camera for their powershot line up. And for all the Canon fans out there who waited for four freaking years for an upgrade for the predecessor SX60HS, it seems you guys have to look for an alternative. basically like all the consumer electronic products, the new version came with upgraded hardware but surprisingly canon chopped down some of the features in the previous model, making it an underwhelming upgrade.

When you consider the super zoom bridge camera market, Nikon has recently announced the Nikon P1000 with 125x optical zoom lens. and at the moment, without a doubt they are leading the super zoom market. As a SX60HS user, i strongly believed that canon will launch the SX70HS with a 100x zoom lens as they have filed the patents for such a technology.

The new camera comes with an upgraded 20.3 MP BSI-CMOS sensor along with the latest DIGIC 8 image processor. A high resolution 2360k dot EVF with an eye sensor is also present. The photographers are presented with the ability to capture images  with the company’s latest .CR3 RAW format. other improvements include 10.0 fps continues shooting , 4K@30fps video recording, a zoom in/out button on the side of the barrel and built in Bluetooth connectivity.

Sounds pretty good right? but what about the practical usage of this camera? canon has removed the hot-shoe from SX70HS so even though you have a dedicated MIC port, it is useless. you might need to hold the mic in your hands. Automatic Exposure Bracketing (AEB) is also removed. duh ! another issue is, the low light photography will be bad on this camera (unless DIGIC 8 comes to rescue), technically speaking, we know that stacking more Mega Pixels on a 1/2.3" sensor will result more image noise. The optic system of the new camera is the same as the predecessor. it's very unfortunate to see that Canon failed to upgrade the lens system even after 4 years. I know numbers doesn't matter always but to extend the market share, Canon must innovate with their new products.

Reasons to Consider Canon SX60HS

  • Better Battery Life
  • Hot-shoe for external flash and other accessories
  • Lower Price (for same optics)
  • Better Low-light Photography
  • Automatic Exposure Bracketing (AEB)

Reasons to Consider Canon SX70HS

  • 4K video recording
  • Higher continues shooting @10fps
  • Better EVF
  • Light Weight (42g)
  • Bluetooth Connectivity

what are your thoughts on this new camera? for me, i will stick to my sx60hs for few years. The P1000 is too bulky for my preferences. otherwise it would be the perfect super zoom camera for my use.
